Another teen killed in crash involving stolen car; youth mentor says: “We’re fighting the streets”

MILWAUKEE -- After another teenager died in a crash involving a stolen vehicle on Saturday, January 22nd, Milwaukee's youth mentoring groups are doubling down.

"Operation Dream" started about 10 years ago. The program mentors boys between the ages of four and 18.

With juveniles as young as 12 or 13 recently arrested for vehicle thefts, the group's director knows they're facing a huge challenge.

Rodney Bourrage knows every minute his boys spend under the watch of Operation Dream is a minute they aren't spending with his long-time nemesis.

"We`re always fighting against the streets. It`s a challenge for us to be able to steer the boys down the right road." ~Rodney Bourrage, director of Operation Dream

"We`re always fighting against the streets. It`s a challenge for us to be able to steer the boys down the right road, down the right avenue," Bourrage said.

Rodney Bourrage

Bourrage says he's well aware of the fact that too many Milwaukee teenagers are speeding down the city's avenues in stolen vehicles.

Some are dying while doing so.

The most recent victim is 16-year-old DeAnthony Parks.

Family members and friends have wrapped balloons and cards around a street light near Capitol Drive and Port Washington Road.

That's where the stolen car Parks was riding in flipped after hitting another car. Parks was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say this was the seventh fatal crash involving a stolen vehicle in Milwaukee since November.

"16 years old. He`s had six arrests from two different agencies," Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said.

Chief Flynn says authorities knew the teen well.

"He has been on the Auto Theft Robbery Task Force list since August of last year," Chief Flynn said.

Some of the city's top officials are now questioning whether the county's juvenile justice system is holding repeat offenders accountable.

"I`m not calling for every person being locked up. But when someone has a record as long as my arm, and the only punishment is a day -- perhaps a day in jail -- it`s insignificant," Milwaukee Common Council President Michael Murphy said.

Operation Dream

"They need someone there to guide them," Bourrage said.

Bourrage says preventing these crimes in the first place starts with jobs.

"Work gives them money. It gives them power," Bourrage said.

It also involves knowing who is influencing these teens.

"You have to be with the right people. We teach them that you`re judged by the company you keep," Bourrage said.

Police say they're still looking for the driver of that stolen vehicle in Saturday's crash at Capitol and Port Washington.

One of the cornerstones of Operation Dream is Operation Work. As part of that program, teens had a private meet-and-greet with the Milwaukee Bucks front office staff on Monday night, January 25th, where they learned about the business of basketball.

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified two men killed in a crash early on Sunday morning, February 7th near 91st and Bradley: 37-year-old Antoine Lewis and 37-year-old Nicholas Ashford — both of Milwaukee.

The preliminary manner of death for these men has been ruled accidental. It was determined that they died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries.

The crash happened around 2:00 a.m.

The medical examiner’s report indicates the vehicle the men were in was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a tree near 91st and Bradley.

Both of the men had to be extricated from the vehicle.

The report indicates Ashford was driving the vehicle, and Lewis was the passenger.

According to the report, the crash was witnessed by Lewis’ girlfriend and others, who were in the vehicle in front of the vehicle Lewis and Ashford were in.

The report indicates Ashford and Lewis had been at a party all night at Gene’s Supper Club in Milwaukee prior to the crash. They were traveling at an estimated 75 miles-per-hour when they drove over railroad tracks and lost control — striking the curb and one tree, which then catapulted the vehicle into another nearby tree at an “extreme rate of speed.”

Family members and friends in the vehicle in front of the vehicle Ashford and Lewis were in told investigators the men “had been drinking all night.”

The report indicates the vehicle suffered “an inordinate amount of damage, rendering it almost unrecognizable.”

According to the report, Ashford and Lewis were not wearing seat belts.

Brown Deer crashBROWN DEER -- Two young lives were lost -- and a third person was left critically hurt in a crash involving one vehicle in Brown Deer early Thursday morning, February 11th.

It happened near Dean and Teutonia around 12:30 a.m.

When police arrived on scene, they found a car that appeared to have lost control and left the roadway while southbound on Teutonia Avenue. The vehicle rolled over at least once across Dean Road and crashed into a tree line just south of the intersection.

Three women were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Two were ejected from the car and one had to be extricated from the car.

The driver, 20-year-old Kierra Monei Jackson of Milwaukee,  died at the scene.

A passenger, a 22-year-old Milwaukee woman, was flown to the hospital by Flight for Life. She died at the hospital.

The third occupant, a 20-year-old Milwaukee woman, was transported to the hospital by the North Shore Fire Department -- where she was in critical condition.

Those involved in this crash worked at Walmart. We're told they were coming from a nearby restaurant -- headed home.

"She loved life. She loved everybody. Everybody liked her. She was working, going to school and hanging out with friends," Jeannie Jackson, Kierra Monei Jackson's grandmother said.

Speed is being investigated as a possible factor in this crash.

It is not the first time Brown Deer police have seen a crash near the intersection of Dean and Teutonia.

On December 1st, 2015, a 59-year-old man was killed after police say he was speeding, lost control and crashed while driving his sick granddaughter to a nearby clinic.

Police say since the start of 2016, they are taking action in areas where there's been an increase in crashes.

"We're trying to do something called 'high visibility traffic enforcement,'" Brad Caddock with the Brown Deer Police Department said.

Police say they're stopping cars, writing warnings and citations and saturating certain areas.

"Inattentive driving, following too closely, driving not within the speed limits. We use that enforcement and hopefully educate them and reduce traffic crashes," Caddock said.

It's being done in an effort to avoid a situation where another grandmother has to come out to a tragic scene.

"I came to just...to see...to see the sight," Jeannie Jackson said.

The investigation into this crash continues with the assistance of the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Jordyn Mueller

Jordyn Mueller is Lauren Unertl's cousin. Mueller tells FOX6 News they recently went shopping together, and the jewelry Lauren bought will now be worn at her funeral.

"Two weeks before she passed, we went to get these. She will be wearing that when she goes," Mueller said.

Mueller says she and her cousin were inseparable.

"We were a month apart in age. We grew up together. We shared a crib since six months old. We did everything together," Mueller said.

As she created a collage of memories with photos of Lauren Unertl and her mother and father, Mueller on Monday, February 15th recalled the happy times.

"She`s amazing. Her personality could not be matched. A flower child, to put it simply. She was one with nature and everything. There was no anger in her. There was no guilt. She loved life," Mueller said.

Upon learning of Unertl's death, Mueller said "I just fell apart."

Even more painful is the fact that police suspect the striking driver was impaired.

"I'm so angry. This is the one thing she believed in more than anything. If she had a beer -- she was not getting behind the wheel," Mueller said.

That's a practice Mueller hopes others will adopt so her family's loss won't be in vain.

"She`s not the first, and won't be the last lost to drunk driving -- but if she could just change one person's mind, that would be OK," Mueller said.

Charges could be filed in this case as soon as Tuesday, February 16th.

“Everyone was close to him, and now that he’s gone…” Jillian Jaycox said.

“He always brightened up everyone’s day — and it’s just sad to see him go,” Morgan Bould said.

“It was a tough, tough day (Monday) for staff, and (Tuesday) — even tougher,” Ted Neitzke, superintendent of West Bend Schools said.

Neitzke described Yauck as an intelligent student who took advanced placement classes, was fluent in French and had recently been accepted to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Neitzke said counselors and school psychologists will be staffing an area at the high school’s library for as long as necessary.

“Each hour of the day, it’s open to service students and staff to make sure that their emotional needs are met, and that we can help children cope,” Neitzke said.

“Everyone’s still kind of in shock,” Jaycox said.

The incident remains under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
