MEQUON (WITI) — Mequon officials identified on Tuesday, March 17th the victim of a fatal parking lot crash in Mequon. She is 85-year-old Lorraine Winter of Milwaukee. Police say she was struck by a vehicle driven by her husband.

Officials say Lorraine Winter died from “multiple blunt force injuries. She was struck by a vehicle just after 3:30 p.m. on Monday, March 16th.

Lorraine’s 87-year-old husband, Henry Winter was driving the vehicle. He is in the hospital, as police say it appears he had some sort of medical event which led to this tragedy.

Hawa Sock is the couple’s neighbor.

“They look like a happy couple. They loved each other. I always see them together. That’s very sad. You don’t expect to do that to your wife. It’s not him. It’s by accident,” Sock said.

On Monday, police tape blocked the Sendik’s parking lot in Mequon. Police say the vehicle Henry Winter was driving struck five parked vehicles while operating in reverse. Winter then apparently accelerated forward — striking his wife along with several other parked vehicles.

Lorraine Winter died at the scene.

Police believe Henry Winter suffered some sort of medical event which led to what happened.

“I feel very sorry for him. I pray he feel better,” Sock said.

This devastating tragedy has some thinking about their elderly loved ones and driving safety. The medical emergency that affected Henry Winter may not have been able to have been prevented, but Wayne Wiese, the state coordinator for the AARP Driver Safety Program in Wisconsin says it is important to plan for the future. The organization has several offerings for seniors, and one is a refresher class on driving safety.

“Focus on changes in people mentally, physically and also technology changes in cars as well as on the roadway,” Wiese said.

Another program is called “We Need To Talk.”

“Geared toward caregivers and family and friends of aging drivers to understand the warning signs of where their skills are starting to diminish a bit and ways to take steps to pan for the future about reducing driving up to stopping driving in the future,” Wiese said.

Mequon police say no criminal charges are planned in the incident involving Lorraine and Henry Winter.
